QUALITY
NON-NEGOTIABLES
- Sourcing: Are the oils sourced sustainably and as natively as possible?
- Transparency: Are they transparent? They should share their story and mission etc. I want to feel like I’m shopping from my family.
- Education: Do they seek to educate? It’s a brand’s responsibility to educate the customer so you’re using your oils most effectively. For this, I’m looking for a blog on their website and a social media account with recipes etc.
- Safety: Is safety info specific to each oil? Eg photosensitive, skin sensitizers etc. There should just be a generic statement on each oil listing page.
- Testing: Do they 3rd party test? Are the tests (GC/MS) up to date? I want to be able to click on a listing page to see current tests (going to look up batch numbers is still acceptable but not preferred).
- Pricing: the prices need to be in the ballpark of the other brands I use and trust, and essential oils should be priced individually (not $9.99 across the board)
Bonus: These are a bonus if the brand also has:
- Home Products
- Supplements
- Bath and Body
- Rollers
- Sets
- Diffusers and accessories
- it just makes shopping for nontoxic products easier
Some other questions to ask:
- How long has the company been in business?
- Did their oils have expiration dates? They shouldn’t have an expiration date but oils do have a shelf life and it’s specific to each oil. If there is an exp date it’s probably mixed with something else which should be clearly labeled on the bottle
- Does the company own their own farms?
- Is there an aromatherapist on staff?
- If their company purchases oils for an outside suppliers do they visit the distilleries and farms to make sure they are grown without pesticides herbicides or chemical fertilizers?
- Do they know if the crops are harvested at their peak time?
