Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing the top 10 best essential oil brands in 2022. I have done lots of reviews and comparisons on my Youtube channel so make sure to visit if you like to watch videos as well. There is a lot that goes in to making essential oils and there is a lot that goes into deciding on what brand to use. I’m going to break it down nice and simple (my speed) and hopefully help you make the best decision when it comes to buying and using essential oils.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants from a process called distillation; The oil captures the plant’s scent or flavor, also called its “essence”. The oils are steam distilled from the stems, rind, leaves, bark, petals, etc. Citrus oils are cold pressed, but most others are steam distilled.

What makes an essential oil company “good”?

non-negotiables for me:

  • third party testing
  • organic
  • proper farming, harvesting, and distilling
  • Latin name on the bottle

some other questions to ask:

  • How long has the company been in business?
  • Do their oils have expiration dates?
  • Does the company own their own farms?
  • If their company purchases oils for an outside suppliers do they visit the distilleries and farms to make sure they are grown without pesticides herbicides or chemical fertilizers?
  • Does the company supplement the distillation process with solvents to extract additional oil from the plant matter?
  • Does your supplier use low pressure and low temperature to distill essential oil so as to preserve all of their fragile chemical constituent?
  • Are the distillation cookers fabricated from costly, food grade stainless steel alloys to reduce the likelihood of the oil’s chemically reacting with metal?
  • Does your supplier personally inspect the fields and distilleries where the herbs are grown and distilled?
  • Do they verify that no synthetic or harmful solvent or chemicals are being used?
  • How many years has your supplier been doing all of this?
  • Are the distillation facilities part of the farm where the herbs are grown, or do herbs wait days to be processed and lose potency does your supplier grow and just organically grown herbs?
  • Does your supplier subject each batch of essential oils to multiple chemical analysis to test for purity?

Rocky Mountain

From them:

“We had a dream to create something that was inspired by our love and admiration for nature and the healing properties of the earth. We wanted to encourage people to connect with themselves on a deeper level and use the natural resources around them to reflect and grow. Most importantly, we wanted to speak directly to you, find out what you want, what you like, what you hold dear and close to you.”

My personal opinion:

Rocky Mountain was one of the first brands that I tried after using young living exclusively, I’m super impressed with their quality and variety of blends that they offer. I also like their website and Instagram because they share a lot of practical ways to use your oils, and they’re down to earth.

Simply Earth

From them:

As a company fighting to end human trafficking, we are passionate about sourcing our oils from ethical farms. We source oils in small batches when we can, and always from small, ethical farms all over the world — wherever that particular oil grows best!

All of our 100% pure essential oils go through rigorous third party testing to make sure the oils are pure. That means we KNOW our oils are free of fillers, fragrances, and contaminants. Don’t just take our word for it! We value transparency as a company, so every GC/MS report for every batch is made available to you on the product page.

There are lots of FAKE essential oils out there. FAKE essential oils have additives like fragrance or carrier oils, or contaminants like pesticides. At Simply Earth, we make sure the oils we sell are free of fragrances and fillers, AND we make sure that NO contaminants ever make it into your bottle.

My personal opinion:

Simply earth has been so fun for us, they offer a monthly recipe box that gives you four oils and a few recipes + ingredients to make each one. They are also very down to earth and formulated by aromatherapists and they share lots of good info on safety, and when you subscribe to their recipe box you get access to an essential oil course which is super helpful when starting out.

From them:

“REVIVE Essential Oils & Blends actually work. Our effective and potent Oils and Blends will help you sleep, improve upset stomach, reduce anxious feelings, achieve serenity, relieve head and neck tension, reduce inflammation, keep your home clean, and much more.

REVIVE is sold directly from our website and delivered to your door.  We don’t have any middle men selling our product.  Those middle men are expensive and make essential oils more expensive for you.  We sell directly to you which means we can have the same high quality essential oils but sell them at a cheaper price because we are passing on the savings directly to you.”

My personal opinion:

I held off from buying revive for a while just because of their marketing strategy, they basically just go in against the major MLM’s. After trying them though and sad I didn’t try them sooner just because for that reason. Their oils are amazing and they get their oils third-party tested at a reputable company. Another pro is that if you like specific blends from the other top MLM companies they have the exact dupe for each one including progessence plus from Young living which is my favorite hormone support oil.

Eden’s Garden

From them:

“Edens Garden has come a long way since I started it at my home in 2009. As a women-led, family-owned and faith-based company, we’ve worked with passion and intention to help others find more goodness, selling millions of bottles of essential oils worldwide and giving back to charities making a difference.

All of our products are sustainability produced, non-toxic, vegan, cruelty-free and made with our unstoppable 100% pure essential oils. Our team of experts spend countless hours researching, formulating and testing products before sharing them with our EG community. We’ve taken the time to find healthier ingredients, more sustainable production and advanced blending techniques to make sure we offer the highest quality at the highest value possible.”

My personal opinion:

I love Eden’s gardens story, and that they are women owned and operated. Their blends definitely set them apart from any other brand, and in my opinion they smelled the best. I think they have really great quality and do all of the right things, their prices are just a little higher than I would love them to be. But I don’t mind paying for their quality.

Plant Therapy

From them:

“Free from GMOs and harmful pesticides, all of our organic products are certified through ECOCERT ICO. Feel confident knowing that your organic purchase is helping to conserve our precious natural resources and reducing environmental pollution.

All of our essential oils go through rigorous independent third-party testing. These GC-MS test reports, which provide in-depth information on the chemical constituents in each oil, can be found on the product page. They show you exactly what’s in the oils you buy.”

My personal opinion:

This was the first brand I tried outside of young living. I love the how helpful their website is and all the information they share. They also have a really nice kid safe line which I appreciate being a mom. Their prices are amazing and one of my favorite things about them is that they have a 2.5 mL bottle which makes buying the more pricey oils more affordable. You can also get them on Amazon which is super convenient.

Mountain Rose Herbs

From them:

People, plants, and planet are more important than profit. This seemingly simple principle is the bedrock on which Mountain Rose Herbs is built, the foundational philosophy that has guided us every day for 33 years and counting. In these unprecedented times, when communities around the world are buffeted on all sides by global warming and pandemic, this statement continues to be our guiding light. It is the heart of what we do and the core of why we advocate so fiercely for sustainable organic agriculture, native plants, and fair trade.

At the end of the day, sustainable quality of life hinges delicately on how we caretake our planet: how we tend to our watersheds; how we nurture our soils, water, and air; how we grow and distribute the food we eat and the botanicals we love. This is why we are unwaveringly committed to rigorous quality testing on all our products, why we only use packaging that is environmentally friendly, why we invest in our properties with solar energy, satellite-controlled water conservation systems, and bioswales to filter runoff water from our roofs and pavement. It is why we worked hard to become Oregon’s first Zero Waste Facility, diverting more than 90% of all non-hazardous waste from landfills and incineration.

My personal opinion:

I have a lot of respect for this company, they are doing so many things right. I love their commitment to sustainability as well as just being an overall really ethical company. I just placed my first order and will be updating this section once I’ve tried the oils and have my full review and opinion.

My personal opinion:

I feel like this is a friend that you’ve seen a lot of wellness stores, and in the short amount of time I’ve spent researching it feels like that’s what they focus on. I don’t like that I don’t have any USDA organic oils, but they do the proper testing for the oils and they have a lot of cool articles on their website with recipes and things like that. A pro would be that they are available in some stores as well as Amazon. The prices are good as well.

Aromatics international

From them:

Andrea Butje and Cindy Black co-founded the Aromahead Institute, an internationally-recognized aromatherapy school. Through the course of their teaching, they discovered a need for a trusted source of pure, high-quality essential oils to support students in their studies, lives, and work. They traveled the world to see how small-scale producers care for their plants and observe their methods for extracting the highest-quality essential oils. They went on to co-found Aromatics International to connect these traditional, small-scale distillers with students and customers who share their appreciation for high-quality essential oils.

My personal opinion:

This is a very legit source to get your essential oils, the founders are aromatherapists who also founded an accredited aromatherapy school. I haven’t used these oils before but I can’t wait to place my first order so I can do a comparison on my YouTube channel. They do all of the right things as far as sourcing farming, harvesting, testing and distributing goes.

Young Living

From them:

“For nearly 30 years, we have set the industry standard for delivering the highest quality essential oils on earth. Young Living Founder D. Gary Young developed our five-step Seed to Seal® sourcing standards, insisting on premium quality at every stage. We audit every supplier to make sure they comply with our rigorous criteria and maintain our exacting methods throughout every stage of the process.”

My personal opinion:

You can hear my entire opinion on Young living right here, to sum it up though I was a member for two years selling the oils as a distributor but recently just stepped down as a customer and only buy what we absolutely need from them because of pricing.

From them:

Founded in 2008, doTERRA was built on the mission of sharing tested-grade essential oils with the world. Having seen for themselves the incredible benefits that can be had from using these precious resources, a group of health-care and business professionals set out to make this mission a reality. They formed a company and named it doTERRA, a Latin derivative meaning “Gift of the Earth.”

My personal opinion:

I’ve never used doTERRA and probably never well just for the fact that they are an MLM and I am staying away from those. Out of all the research I’ve done and opinions I’ve seen doTERRA does have top quality oils and I would trust them, I’m just not interested in paying their price being a nonmember, and also not interested in becoming a member.
